Mr. Bidoon has been fishing the Beya Inlet since he retired ten years ago. A former forklift operator and one of Port Sardina’s oldest residents, Bidoon spent most of his time staring at his reflection in the pristine turquoise waters of the inlet, patiently waiting for a fish to take the bait. The elderly fisherman encountered a haunting scene as he headed to the pier earlier this week; muddy waters and what appear to be gas bubbles breaking the water’s surface. Scientists are divided as to whether the murky sludge and gas bubbles are a natural occurrence or the result of toxic waste being released in to the inlet. Although the latter seems unlikely given the complete absence of energy or industrial production in this small town, the suddenness and extent of the environmental transformation is a troubling sign.
